The father, beer in hand, arranged his five daughters in a row and handed them toy flags as the orchestra began playing the various anthems of the armed services. The rudely laughing, drunken uncles took the youngest aside and taught her how to salute the flag military-style, hand above the eyes. As she turned to her sisters, they demanded the others do the same. The middle daughter, probably no older than 8, frowned and in a loud, plaintive voice said,
“Daddy, I don’t want to salute the flag! I don’t believe in the war!”
