See and be Scene

Quite by accident, I ended up standing sandwiched between two people whose blogs and flickr photostreams I follow regularly (thanks, chicagobloggers.com), but had never met in real life. I know their names, a canonical list of favorite books, movies and bands courtesy of Facebook, the names of their friends, where they live, what their significant others are like, their current place of employment, all kinds of incredibly personal details, simply from reading their blogs. Everything except a reason to actually approach them and start a conversation, that is.

  1. You do remember that the one time I made that exact plunge when you pointed out Jason’s blog, we became really good friends and hang out to this day despite living in different cities? So, umm, why do you need a reason?!

Email those two folks with a link to this post — I can almost guarantee you they’ll give you crap for passing on the chance to say hi.

  2. I actually did walk up to somebody once, and introduced myself as ‘David from flickr’. She was/is heavy into the Chicago Ultimate scene, one-half of the duo that produces ‘casualultimate’ (cf. blogroll on the right), and had noticed my photos after they were linked from Chicagoist. This was at the Spring League tournament, where her team was playing mine, so I’m not sure if this counts.

  3. Are you going to post pictures from Joe’s wedding, or did they all turn out crappy?

  4. Katherine: as a groomsman, at what point would I have had opportunity to take these mythical photos? Moreover, when did you ever see me holding a camera during the entire event?

  6. That’s funny…I came extremely close to going to that show. I’ve had my share of “Hi, I’m Leah. From the internet?” greetings and I’ve found it’s nearly always a good idea to bite that dorky bullet and say hello.

Conversations usually grow around it. Somehow.
